Thought for the day

Why is Lindsay Lohan calling Barack Obama our nation's "first colored president" more news worthy than our nation electing its first colored president?

Mendes to direct "Preacher"

Fuck. Just let this film die. No movie can do this story justice. The series that Mark Steven Johnson shopped to HBO at least would have done justice the novel's arc, but a single film? Jesus Christ. Follow the link for the story.

U.S. military: No. 2 al-Qaida in Iraq chief killed

BAGHDAD - American soldiers killed the alleged No. 2 leader of al-Qaida in Iraq, a Moroccan who trained in Afghanistan, recruited foreign fighters and ran operations in northern Iraq where Sunni insurgents remain a potent threat, the U.S. military said Wednesday.

Continued on MSNBC.

Isn't this like the fourth time we've killed al-Qaida's #2 guy?

The Godfather at Arclight Hollywood

Last night was the start of Arclight Hollywood's presentation of "The Godfather" and "The Godfather part II." Both films have been meticulously restored by Robert A. Harris who has previously worked his magic on David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia" and Stanley Kubrick's "Spartacus." The restoration is nothing short of a miracle. Despite the fact that it was a film based screening, the detail and clarity revealed in these new prints is startling. If you're in the area, there's no excuse not to check out these films on the big screen.

"Oh Rocky!"

My love of film rules my life at times, I'm the first to admit it. But while I've met almost all other requirements set by the cinerati there is but one that I've avoided... until last night.

After being a film lover for almost 22 years I finally did what so many before me have done countless times before: I finally saw "The Rock Horror Picture Show." Not that last night's midnight screening at the Nuart was the first time I had ever seen the picture but it was the first time I had seen it with an audience.

Of course no one goes to "The Rock Horror Picture Show" to watch the film. It's all about the atmosphere, the people, the lingerie, the... okay I'll just come right out and say it: "t & a." Last night's show did not disappoint in this regard as local L.A. cast Sins O' the Flesh put on one heck of a performance, one that I have a feeling I may be attending again some time in the future. Now if only they had a separate, non-participatory audience section...

From last night's performance at the Outside Lands Fest in San Fran. Still not a fan, but they do put on one heck of a live show.

I met Tegan R. Quin yesterday!!!!!

Okay, so I know I promised a certain person that I wouldn't geek out over this but screw it, nobody reads this damn thing anyway.

I was invited to attend a press day interview along some of the fine folks over at Mishmash (see link to your right). It was to be held at the Burbank offices of Warner Bros. Records. I didn't perform the interview but I got to sit in for the entire thing was even personally introduced to her! To confirm: Tegan is easily the nicest, most affable person you're likely to find in the biz and the honor was all mine.

The video interview will likely be up at Mishmash pretty soon so keep your eyes peeled and stay tuned!

To the victor go the spoils

The past week saw what was, in my estimation, the best straight series of concerts the L.A. are had seen in quite some time featuring Elvis Costello opening for The Police at the Hollywood Bowl, R.E.M. and Ladytron. While the old folks still know how to put on good show, Ladytron proved to me once again that they are the best live band in the world right now and are right on track to becoming this generation's Pink Floyd. Don't believe me? Check out the clip of "Black Cat" from Friday's performance at the Fonda on the You Tube channel for further evidence (as well as the myriad other clips from the night posted by other users). Their new album, Velocifero, drops this week.

Ollie Johnston 1912-2008

The name Ollie Johnston may not be household known but there are doubtless few that have not been affected by his work with the Walt Disney animation studio as a member of the legendary Nine Old Men. They were Walt's best and brightest amongst a sea of great talent. And now, with the passing Ollie Johnston, they are all but a memory. Read more at Cartoon Brew.
